Bubinga (kevanzingo) is a West African species that has many different cuts, figures, and grain patterns. The veneer is pink to dark red with interlocking grain. Logs are large with many fairly consistent flitches in each log. Pommele bubinga is considered the most valuable.
Bubinga with a strong wide figure crossing each veneer leaf is sometimes called “waterfall bubinga.” Blue or purple staining in the veneer is a common defect in bubinga. Leaves can be wide and the highest quality veneer is consistent in color, grain, and figure.
